New and Interesting
- FeedFlix - How much is your subscription costing you per movie
- Windows Dominates the Netbook Market - We all thought Linux could get to the consumer this way, 96% of Netbooks ship with Windows.

Those who do get a Linux-based netbook are four times more likely to return it to the store than those who get a device running Windows.

Consider the source. It's a Windows blog. ASUS CEO Jerry Shen evidently doesn't read it.

I think the return rate for the Eee PCs are low but I believe the Linux and Windows have similar return rates.

- 44% of Windows 7 Beta Testers are "Very Satisfied" with it (computerworld via @4sysops ) - Vista's rating was only at 10% during the same time frame of beta testing.

Various good tips.

- How to disable Browser Helper Objects and Toolbars in Internet Explorer 7 and 8
Tools - Manage Add Ons

- Compatibility view in Internet Explorer

- Open Multiple instances of Excel (so you can have multiple windows) by holding down ctrl when you click on the second instance. One caveat is that copy / paste might act funny. The main thing I saw with copy paste is that if I copied a cell with a formula in it, it would paste the value of the cell rather than the formula. You can get around this particular issue by selecting the formula in the formula bar, and copy that rather than the cell itself. I saw the tip in the comments on this post, thanks to Knox for leaving it!

Find who has files open in Windows Server 2008

I’m sure that I’m not the only one who has become accustomed to opening up Computer Management on a server, and looking in the shared folders in order to find out who has a file open. Well, that was Windows Server 2003. Now that we have Windows Server 2008, it’s just a little bit different.

<!--extended-->

Here’s how you do it.

In Server Manager, expand Roles, then expand File Services, and click on “Share and Storage Management”.

Forcing Windows 7 Adoption

image I downloaded the Windows 7 beta pretty shortly after it was available. I quickly took advantage of some free disk space on my drive, shrunk my partition, and set up dual boot with Windows Vista.

How to Resize (Shrink) your Partition in Vista

Let me guess, you’ve downloaded your copy of Windows 7, and you want to dual boot. Maybe you’ve heard that you can re-claim unused space on your hard drive, and you want to know how. Heck, maybe you want to see what the big deal is with Windows 64 bit.Well never fear, here’s a quick guide on how to reclaim some unused space to use for a shiny new partition.

Server 2008: The Installer has insufficient Privileges to modify this file

image

Sometimes the easiest things can be so difficult. I was just trying to install a simple update package, "Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1" to be exact. The installer returns the error "The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\RelNotes.htm".

How to Change your modem's init strings in Windows Vista

imageI'm going to get a little old school on you here today. Remember those crazy modem init strings? I bet you thought we were all done with those. Well, with Smart Phones that act like blue tooth modems, everything old is new again.

The problem that I ran into was that I had to specify my access point in the init string. Looking at the properties of the modem, the box where you enter the init string isn't available. Well, here's how you change it.

Step 1:

There are two errors associated with this:

"The necessary services are disabled or unavailable. Error 0x80246007"

Documentation? What good is that?

OldBooksGood documentation is really nice to have. I did a Server Migration, or transition this last Friday (the 14th). We went from Server 2003 to Server 2008, and now I'm realizing that my documentation was a little out of date.
