How to Change your modem's init strings in Windows Vista

imageI'm going to get a little old school on you here today. Remember those crazy modem init strings? I bet you thought we were all done with those. Well, with Smart Phones that act like blue tooth modems, everything old is new again.

The problem that I ran into was that I had to specify my access point in the init string. Looking at the properties of the modem, the box where you enter the init string isn't available. Well, here's how you change it.

Recording Skype Calls in Windows Vista for Free

image

Ah, the dream of recording Skype calls. Up until yesterday, I just couldn’t get this seemingly simple task to work. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get it all working, but I just couldn’t seem to do it.

When Art and I record our podcast, Art records his side of the conversation, and I record my side of the conversation. Then I get an MP3 of my side of the conversation to him, and he merges it.

This weeks topic:
Windows 7 and Windows Cloud

Windows 7 Features
- More evolved Kernel
- Virtualization?
- Sensors - What to me sound like WMI or SNMP counters. They provide information that other programs can poll. The example that's going around is a sensor that tells "where" the computer is. Programs can poll it, and if for example your in Siberia, offer to find the closest coat factory. Of course, opt in due to privacy concerns.
- Better adjustments for User Account Control
- Changes to Explorer
- Built in "Accelerators", kind of like a universal, right click menu option. Like "Define" or "Find on a Map". Works across every application.
- No more sidebar. Gadgets will still work, but they float.
- Built in powershell
Lots and lots more. Check out Win SuperSite's FAQ, or the Windows 7 Center.
- This is not Windows Cloud. Not much is known about Windows Cloud,
- The new Cloud Windows? Code Name, Red Dog. (Heard it first on CSTechCast ) CNet
